Radiation Therapy

The Oncological Radiotherapy Department, in an integrated manner and with a multidisciplinary approach, has been in operation since 2000 and has recently been renewed in its technological equipment with the installation of 2 very modern Linear Accelerators: 1 TrueBeam Accelerator and 1 VitalBeam Accelerator. The modern equipment of the Oncological Radiotherapy Unit allows, in addition to the implementation of conformational radiotherapy and IMRT (Modulated Intensity Radiotherapy), also the very modern techniques of Volumetric Arc Radiotherapy (VMAT), through which stereotactic treatments are carried out. Radiation therapy is one of the most effective therapies in fighting cancer diseases along with surgery and chemotherapy. Some types of cancer can be cured with the use of radiation therapy alone, in other cases it may also be necessary to proceed with surgery and/or the administration of anti-blastic drugs.

Radiation therapy is also very useful as palliative therapy for analgesic, decompression, hemostatic, etc. About half of patients with neoplasia need to undergo radiation therapy for curative and symptomatic purposes during their clinical history. Through these sophisticated methods of radiant treatment, it is possible to treat several body sites simultaneously in a targeted manner, thus helping to improve results in the fight against neoplastic disease in the face of increasingly limited side effects.

Practical information

Users can book a Radiation Therapy visit by calling the telephone number 066837223 from Monday to Friday. During the visit, the Radiation Oncologist will evaluate the clinical documentation in the patient's possession, place any indication for radiation treatment and possibly discuss the case in the dedicated multidisciplinary group. During therapy, periodic medical examinations will be carried out to assess the patient's state of health and alleviate side effects. At the end of the treatment, the patient will continue to be periodically visited to verify the effectiveness of the therapy and to monitor the progress of the neoplastic disease.

OUTPATIENT CLINICS and SERVICES - Prohibition of access to carers
Only the recipient of the health service is allowed access to the Outpatient Clinics and Services, no later than 15 minutes before the scheduled time of acceptance. It is not allowed to enter the Hospital outside the hours of the service.

There are exceptions for which the presence of 1 COMPANION is allowed:

• Minors
• Frail and/or not self-sufficient patients;
• Patients in possession of the recognition of disability with a connotation of severity;
• Patients who are not self-sufficient or with physical, mental or cognitive disabilities;
• Foreigners unable to understand and/or speak the Italian language.

Please note that to access the reception, visit and therapy rooms you must wear a surgical mask or FFP2.

Main conditions treated

Outpatient activity

Several pathology-specific outpatient clinics are currently active for the first visits and for re-evaluations, an outpatient clinic for visits during therapy and a follow-up clinic.

Scientific research activities

Collaborative activities are underway for single- and multi-centre studies. The staff also includes a PhD student.
