The Apheresis Techniques in Intensive Care Unit at Ospedale Isola Tiberina – Gemelli Isola is dedicated to the use of therapeutic apheresis in the care of critically ill patients.
Apheresis techniques allow specific components or substances involved in certain pathological processes to be separated and removed from the blood. Their use is assessed according to clearly defined clinical indications and incorporated into the patient’s overall care plan. Treatment requires close collaboration among the specialists involved and careful monitoring throughout the procedure to tailor the intervention to each patient’s condition and needs.
The Unit provides extracorporeal therapies for critically ill patients with multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS). These include continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), the use of sorbents and blood purification cartridges in patients with septic shock, and membranes and systems for extracorporeal carbon dioxide removal (ECCO₂R).
These techniques enable the removal of specific substances or components involved in various pathological processes from the blood. They are used according to clearly defined clinical indications as part of the critically ill patient’s overall care plan. Treatment requires close multidisciplinary collaboration and careful monitoring to adjust the intervention to each patient’s clinical condition and individual needs.
